Why Every Dog and Cat Needs Their Own Bed
Share

Most pet parents love sharing their bed with their fur babies and almost all pets are curled up beside their favourite humans on the couches. It is the most common living room scene and surely there is nothing sweeter than seeing this bonding. But one thing that most pet parents miss out on or do not realise is that even though your dog or your cat sleeps in your bed with you they still need their own bed. It is not just for comfort or aesthetics but for a sense of belonging, security, emotional balance and most importantly independence just like kids. We at Pupr firmly believe that our fur babies also need to be trained as our kids. Founded by two dog loving sisters and tested lovingly on our own pups we are always focused on designing products that support your pet's physical and emotional wellbeing.
🐾 Your bed is shared but their bed is theirs
The philosophy is the same as kids, your ice-cream is theirs too as you are their mum or dad whereas theirs is just theirs as you got it for them. So when a dog or cat sleeps on your bed they are sharing with you as you love them but they are not claiming it as their own. They are sleeping there or sitting there just because you are there. Have you realized most times your dog or your cat will not stay on your bed if you are not lying there with them, as your bed for them is your scent, presence and safety. So when you are at work or working from home, cooking or busy with other chores at home or you have friends over so what happens then is your dog going to go and sleep on your shared bed without you, no. This is when your dog or cat feels unsettled as they do not have their own bed , their own designated resting place, so they keep moving from floor to couch, the garden or the deck looking for comfort. This is when their very own dog or cat bed becomes their safe zone, their anchor, their second home inside your home.
🐾 The emotional need for “Their Own Space”
As we all know dogs are den animals by instinct and cats by nature are territorial. So if you think you will realise how important it is for them to have a dedicated dog bed as it gives them. A familiar bed, pillow and dog blanket in their dedicated space with their own scent helps them relax as it regulates their stress, it makes them feel “This is mine, I belong here.” It gives them a sense of security and this is especially important for young puppies and kittens while they are still learning to live without their mums and their pack of litter. This also becomes important for rescue dogs and cats as they need time to get used to the new space and so every now and then want some personal space and personal time to develop confidence. It is equally important for some dogs and cats who are shy by nature and introverted. Large breeds like Golden Retrievers, Labradors, German Shepherds and Doberman and smaller dog breeds like Cavapoos, Pomeranians, Dachshunds and Shih Tzus all need this “own space” and deserve it when they need it.
🐾 Independence without feeling alone
Your dog and cat may sleep beside you at night but during the day, when you are not sleeping they still need a place to relax without feeling abandoned. A comfortable Pupr washable dog Bed gives them that cosy place of their own, a quiet retreat, a comfy nap zone, a self time in a soothing space which is all theirs. Rather than trying different spots around the house to get comfortable and settled or waiting for you to lie down so that they could rest peacefully. This is not distance , it is emotional maturity. A good quality orthopedic dog bed or a snuggle bed for cats is an essential health investment, as sleeping on the floor or jumping up and down from the couch could strain joints, increase pressure on hips and elbows, it could affect spine alignment or aggravate arthritis in senior dogs and cats. Large dog breed need structured beds which support their bodies while small dog breeds and cats benefit from the soft cushioning to support their delicate bodies.
🐾 A bed is not just a cushion or a fabric it is belonging
Think about it this way, how many of us need
-
Our own pillow
-
Our own blanket
- Our own place to decompress
Our dogs and cats are no different than us, they have the same needs as us, a comfy dog pillow, a soft dog and cat blanket and a designated space in the house where they have their cozy dog or cat bed. This provides them the feeling of being safe when you are busy. Psychologically it helps them with restlessness, clinginess and separation anxiety.
Some parents have this question: why spend money on a dog or a cat bed when my pet sleeps with me on my bed? We hear this often. But see they say my bed so this sense of belonging is also needed for their pet. The reality is the pet bed is not to replace your bed but it is to complement the bond with your pet by accepting the fact that
“You are not just allowed in my space.
You deserve a space of your own.”
That emotional security creates calmer, more confident pets.
