How Coat Type Affects Your Dog’s Bed Choice
Share
How do you choose your bed or mattress or a duvet?
We consider everything back support, do we like firm, medium or soft and plush beds. Do we look for breathable material or a change according to the weather? Cool silky finish in summers but fluffy and dry feel in winters. We consider things like do we feel cold at night or does this not affect us, we toss around every bit to make our sleep better. We need the same thoughtfulness and consideration into understanding our pet’s needs. They sleep for 14-16 hours a day so it is more important to choose wisely and understand how the coat type for a dog and a cat affects your pet beds choice.
So who is going to tell us what type of dog bed is perfect for our furry babies? They won't speak but their coats tell them about what their bodies need. So let us break it down to the types of coats and what it suggests we should choose for our dogs and cats. Short coated dogs and cats like a Beagle,Doberman Pinscher, Abyssinian and Bombay do not have much fur so do not have much natural insulation. Their fur is sleek and beautiful but it does not trap warmth the way thicker coats do. So if you observe carefully you will notice they curl tightly on colder nights or want to cuddle close to you inside your bed as they feel the chill. So the bed we need for these types of dogs and cats is a plush cushioned bed with a soft blanket. This is not luxury as few people would comment on spoiling your pets. It is a non negotiable need for their comfy sleep for the warmth they need and for feeling safe and protection of their joints.
Then we have our long haired pets both dogs and cats who have long hair like the Shih Tzus and Border Collie and the cat breeds like the Turkish Angora and the Balinese. They can trap heat within their long flowing fur. But this long flowing coat also builds static and can tangle their fur with certain fabrics, their coat could get matted and we will need to spend hours grooming to get these knots out, which is not only a long process for us but painful for our fur babies. So the bed these lovely pets need should be made of linen or other smooth and easy to clean material which supports their comfort but also takes care of their health by being easy on their coat.
Then we have our dog breeds like Golden Retriever, Siberian Husky and cats like Siberian and Persian breeds who are known to have double coated fur. So nature has designed them to stay warm, they have an inbuilt undercoat that works as insulation for them and keeps them warm. You will often notice them stretching out long on cool floors as they need to regulate their temperature, you might also notice them laying down with their tummies exposed to get more air. So getting fluffy or heat retaining dog beds enclosed from sides will not be suitable as it might just make them uncomfortable especially in areas where the weather gets too hot. They need breathable, flattish beds made of linen or swede or boucle material, or an orthopedic dog bed to relieve their joints and support their needs of laying down flat.
Then we have the curly coated dogs like the Poodle and Labradoodles and the curly coated cats like the Selkirk Rex and LaPerm who need a lot of thoughtfulness when deciding their beds and what would be the best choice to support their curly coat. Their fur because of its texture can get caught on rough fabrics and pull which can be painful. Because of the density of their hair they can be prone to sensitive skin when coming in contact with synthetic material. What they need is a well made bed with snug and washable covers to keep their large dog bed clean, soft and gentle against their coat curls. So breathable material like linen and boucle would work best for them. Also depending on their sleeping posture you could decide their bed type flat or something which would build a sort of nest for them to sleep.
I feel the whole discussion is more about how well we understand our pets and their needs. It is about our love and care for them that will help in making the decision “How coat types affect your dog/cat’s bed choice” We don't choose our mattress randomly but do so based on our comfort, likes and climate, same is with our pets it is their most precious place in the house , their own resting space , a home inside our home, it is their safe space where they relax after walks and when we are busy with the everyday chores. So when we think and understand these needs of their sleep posture and coat types we don't end up buying any product but we actually tell our furry friend , “We understand your needs and you are important to us, we care for your comfort.Buy dog beds online from PUPR for premium comfort and style.
